The APPG is supportive of recent announcements by the Secretary of State at Defra that wood “shouldn’t be going to landfill in the first place” [1]. A ban on landfill would increase the supply of wood in the UK and would provide an appropriate fuel stream for bioenergy recovery.
We therefore support the use of waste wood which has no further use for manufacturing purposes, in waste incineration directive (WID) compliant, combined heat and power (CHP) plants. These can best deal with this waste stream in an appropriate fashion.
Furthermore, diverting previously landfilled wood to WID compliant CHP plants would also help the UK meet its targets for recycling. The APPG also argues that these targets should be set at a more ambitious level so as to encourage greater investment in appropriate facilities.
